This fabric comes from San Andrés Larrainzar, Chiapas, a community of women in southern Mexico where the use of backstrap loom and traditional brocade is still mastered by the most wonderful and skilled weavers. This technique is ancient and has been passed through generations with great accuracy and success.
This fabric took 2 weeks in being loomed and turned into 6 unique chalkbags.
The Rhomboid design has a special meaningin the mayan cosmovision, and it has been around for millenniums. In the center we can see the Ceiba tree represented with its roots coming out of the underworld whilst the cup reaches the sky. Surrounding it we have the four cardinal points, symbolizing the rise and set of the sun, showing the heart of the sky and the heart of the earth. It portrys the wisdom of past generations.
